Outcreating Disaster Recovery Resilience with Cloud-Based Recovery for a Global Energy Major

For a global energy enterprise, the availability of core ERP systems is critical to business continuity. A leading international oil and gas enterprise relied on JD Edwards for mission-critical operations across multiple geographies. However, its disaster recovery environment could not provide the resilience, security, and scalability required for a growing enterprise. Building a traditional far-site data center would also require significant infrastructure investment. LTM modernized the client's recovery model through a secure, Azure-based cloud disaster recovery environment that strengthened resilience, protected critical data, and supported continuity without application redesign or additional JD Edwards licenses.

New Roads to Value

LTM extended the client's existing JD Edwards environment into Azure through a secure cloud disaster recovery architecture. The solution combined lift-and-shift replication, enterprise security controls, and MS SQL Always-On replication to enable resilient recovery with minimal disruption to existing operations.

We Owned Outcomes

<15-minute RPO through near-real-time data replication

100 key users enabled for continued JD Edwards access during recovery

Enterprise-grade DR without a dedicated far-site data center or additional JD Edwards licenses

Our Client

The client is a leading international oil and gas enterprise operating across multiple industrial segments and geographies. Its operations rely on JD Edwards for critical business processes, making system availability essential to business continuity. Technology and business continuity leaders needed to strengthen recovery readiness while meeting stringent Infosec, audit, and CIS requirements without introducing significant infrastructure costs or disrupting established operations.

Industry Trends

Energy enterprises face significant operational and financial exposure when critical systems become unavailable. As ERP platforms become central to daily operations, organizations are moving from traditional secondary data centers toward disaster recovery in cloud computing environments. Modern DR strategies must balance rapid recovery, continuous data protection, security, compliance, and infrastructure efficiency while providing scalable resilience for business-critical workloads.

Challenges

The client's existing recovery model created several resilience and operational risks:

  • Limited recovery resilience: No scalable secondary environment existed for mission-critical JD Edwards operations.
  • Business continuity exposure: A disruption to the primary environment could restrict access to critical business processes.
  • Security and compliance risk: Limited replication capabilities increased exposure to losing recent business transactions during recovery.
  • Security and audit pressure: The recovery environment needed to meet stringent Infosec, CIS, and internal and external audit requirements.
  • High infrastructure costs: A dedicated far-site data center would require significant capital and ongoing operational investment.
  • Operational disruption risk: Modernizing recovery through application redesign or process changes could disrupt established JD Edwards operations.

LTM Solution

LTM designed and implemented a secure, Azure-based cloud disaster recovery environment that extended the client's existing JD Edwards platform into the cloud.

A lift-and-shift approach replicated the existing environment without application redesign, process changes, or user retraining. MS SQL Always-On enabled continuous data synchronization between production and recovery environments, supporting an RPO of less than 15 minutes.

LTM also extended the client's enterprise domain into Azure through a dedicated Domain Controller architecture. Security policies and access controls were synchronized across environments. WAF, MFA, and cloud security controls strengthened protection and supported Infosec, CIS, and audit requirements.

The resulting architecture provided a scalable recovery environment that preserved existing applications and user access while strengthening resilience, data protection, and operational continuity.

Business Outcomes

  • Less than 15-minute RPO: Near-real-time replication significantly reduced potential data loss during recovery.
  • 100 key users supported: Enabled continued JD Edwards access during disaster recovery scenarios.
  • Stronger resilience: Established a geographically separated recovery environment for critical operations.
  • Enhanced security: Strengthened access and application protection through WAF, MFA, domain controls, and synchronized policies.
  • Improved audit readiness: Provided a more robust and verifiable recovery framework.
  • Lower infrastructure investment: Eliminated the need for a dedicated far-site data center.
  • No additional JD Edwards licenses: Extended the existing environment into Azure without additional application licensing.

Conclusion

LTM helped the client transform disaster recovery from a compliance requirement into a strategic resilience capability. The Azure-based architecture strengthened JD Edwards recovery readiness while reducing infrastructure complexity and investment. With near-real-time data protection, enterprise-grade security, and continued access for critical users, the organization now has a future-ready foundation to scale cloud disaster recovery, strengthen long-term business continuity, and extend resilience across other critical enterprise workloads.
