A leading low-cost airline in North America, the client connects underserved cities to high-demand leisure destinations across the United States. Operating a growing network of nearly 100 destinations, the airline is known for its budget-friendly, nonstop travel model and lean operations.

Amid aggressive route expansion, increasing passenger volumes, and rising operational complexity, the airline needed a digital backbone that could scale effortlessly. Its flexible, point-to-point business model, designed for seasonal demand shifts, required an IT ecosystem that was resilient, cost-efficient, and ready to support long-term growth.

Market Trends in Aviation and Low-Cost Travel

The U.S. airline industry is undergoing accelerated transformation, fueled by a post-pandemic travel rebound, surging leisure demand, and a growing shift toward low-cost, point-to-point service models. Airlines are expanding routes aggressively and adopting fuel-efficient fleets to stay competitive.

However, rising fuel and labor costs, fluctuating consumer demand, and supply chain constraints challenge this growth. To remain profitable and responsive, carriers must invest in cloud migration, leveraging scalable infrastructure and automation to optimize costs, manage seasonal volatility, and support rapid growth.

The Need for Change

  • Legacy architecture limiting business agility: The client’s IT ecosystem supported over 200+ critical applications built on a clustered, shared-system architecture. This rigidity made it challenging to scale services in response to seasonal demand spikes, directly impacting customer satisfaction and revenue opportunities during peak periods.
  • High infrastructure costs draining operational efficiency: Maintaining legacy systems requires significant capital expenditure on hardware, support, and upgrades. These recurring costs constrained IT budgets and diverted resources from innovation and customer-facing improvements.
  • Scalability bottlenecks during peak traffic: The shared-system design lacked elasticity, making it hard to handle sudden surges in traffic, such as during new route launches or holiday travel seasons. This led to performance lags and operational risk. With Cloud migration a new architecture capability would unlock serverless containers which would further enable IT teams to roll out more features frequently. 
  • Operational disruptions from hardware failures: Frequent breakdowns in the legacy infrastructure created unplanned downtime, affecting everything from online booking to internal operations, and undermining service reliability and passenger trust.

    LTM partnered with the client to design and implement a scalable, cost-efficient, and resilient Amazon Web Services (AWS)-based digital foundation specifically built to support peak travel demand, modern applications, and long-term business growth.

    • Automated cloud infrastructure for speed and consistency : Using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools like Terraform and Ansible, LTM established a fully automated AWS landing zone. This enabled rapid, repeatable provisioning of environments, resulted in 60% efficiency, reducing manual effort and human error while accelerating time-to-market.
    • High availability across all critical systems : To eliminate service disruption risks, the team deployed high-availability architecture leveraging EC2 Image Builder, AWS Lambda, and Step Functions, ensuring seamless release management through custom-built deployers, enabling smooth rollout of new features and achieving 20% YoY growth, while enhancing resilience across the airline’s core workloads.
    • Seamless migration of over Terabytes of legacy file systems: LTM used AWS DataSync to migrate large-scale data sets to Amazon EFS and FSx. This improved data accessibility, eliminated storage silos, and streamlined backend processes that support booking, flight operations, and customer systems.
    • Minimal-touch application modernization with built-in scalability : Strategic use of AWS services like Amazon MSK, Elasticache, and AWS relational database service (RDS) allowed key systems to scale dynamically with demand, while keeping modernization timelines lean and disruption minimal.
    • AI-Driven Framework for Scalable Cloud Image Management: Implemented an AI-enhanced post-go-live image management framework. Leveraging GitHub Actions & Ansible, it enables one-click deployments that streamline patching, compliance, & lifecycle management. Strengthens operations, simplifies support workflows, & ensures scalable, sustainable cloud infrastructure.
    • Resiliency testing for real-world reliability : Using AWS Fault Injection Simulator (FIS), LTIMindtree conducted proactive failure simulations across environments, validating system behavior under stress and improving fault tolerance across operations.

    • FinOps-Led Automation Delivers $1.25M Annual Savings : Leveraging FinOps principles & targeted automation strategies, the airline achieved $1.25 million in annual savings—including $750K through cloud cost optimization and $500K from reduced operational overhead.
