On-Premise to AWS Migration and Managed Services for Mahanagar Gas Limited Reduces TCO by 44%

Mahanagar Gas Limited, (MGL) one of India's leading Natural Gas Distribution Companies was incorporated on 8th May 1995. GAIL (India) Limited (Maharatna Company of Govt. of India) is the promoter of MGL. 

Challenges

• The client wanted to leverage the AWS Platform for its SAP-based workloads as its existing legacy solutions hampered its growth. 
• Wanted to reduce the current data centers’ cost and technology debt footprint.
• But it lacked technical proficiency and prior experience in hosting and managing its workload on the AWS platform. 
• The client was looking for an AWS partner specializing in the SAP managed/hosting service on AWS to help upgrade and migrate its SAP ERP Central Component (ECC) and Enterprise Portal (EP)-based applications to the AWS Cloud. 

LTM Solution 

LTM team collaborated with the customer’s operational and engineering teams and proposed the below solution to overcome challenges.

• Upgraded Oracle ECC to the latest version from the existing and unsupported Oracle 11g.
• Upgraded the EP as the existing version was at the end of its life and needed an upgrade before migrating to the cloud
• Migrated the server from IBM AIX to Oracle Linux 8.6 
• Leveraged native AWS services for monitoring, backup, retention, security, analytics, cost management, management, governance, and compliance.
• Undertook as-is migration of SAP applications. 
• Designed and implemented an AWS landing zone with a 1GB direct connection as the primary connectivity and used a VPN as a backup.
• Designed and implemented a seamless disaster recovery solution with AWS Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR), a backup lifecycle policy, and zero trust security
• Used the following AWS Services: Route 53, Direct Connect, Transit Gateway, AWS VPN, Amazon Elastic Block Store, Amazon EC2, VPC, AWS Cost Explorer, CloudTrail, CloudWatch, AWS Compute Optimizer, Config, Trusted Advisor, IAM, GuardDuty, Security Hub, AWS Backup, EFS, S3, S3 Glacier.
• Reduced cloud waste by analyzing consumption and billing reports to identify orphaned, overprovisioned, idle, suboptimal pricing options, and suboptimal use of reserved capacity.
